Lainé, Joseph, viscount

   political figure

   Born in bordeaux, Joseph, viscount Lainé, a member of the Legislative Corps in 1808, was a political independent. Having taken a position in favor of peace and freedom in 1813, he was accused by napoléon i of being in the service of Great Britain. President of the Chamber (1815-16), he tried to oppose the reactionary measures of the ultras (monarchists) and helped to have the Chamber dissolved in 1816. A member of two cabinets of armand richelieu (1816-18, 1820-21), and a peer (1822-30), he was opposed to the Spanish expedition (1823), in support of the Spanish king. viscount Lainé was elected to the Académie Française in 1816.
